"The NASCAR Liberal" clyde@dubyaD40.com

My Mea Culpa
By Clyde
Thursday, October 20, 2005

Yesterday was a day that I will remember for a long time because I came to the realization that in many ways I am a closed minded individual and it took a reader of our website to point it out. We had posted a story about government relief funds being used to rebuild religious schools and other religious organizations that were damaged by hurricane Katrina. Well a reader posted a comment about how he or she thought it was appropriate and I responded that I felt differently. As with every time that people begin to talk about the intermixing of politics and religion it soon escalated from a reasonable debate to finger pointing, name calling and if it had been in person it probably would have ended in blows to the head, kidney and family jewels by both.

During that (ahem) "debate" I was told by said reader that I was a closed minded liberal who hates Christianity. As to being closed minded about the subject I have to admit that I am, but as for the part about hating Christianity that is nothing more than a bullshit right wing talking point and I cannot believe that a person who says they agree with 99% of what our website promotes would use such an inane and ridiculous argument. I admit that I do not believe that federal tax dollars should be used in any way, in any form or for any instance to rebuild, bolster or promote any religion or any religious symbol, teaching or structure. But that does not mean that I hate Christianity or Christians of any particular sect because I am in fact a Christian, I just do not believe in organized religion.

I believe in the teachings of Christ where it concerns the way we all should live our lives and that God is a benevolent entity, but I do not feel the need to have someone put his or her hand out wanting money in order to continue to preach to me on how I should live my life but that is just my opinion and I have the right to hold it. However, some people find comfort in going to church every week and listening to someone else's interpretation of religious teachings and I am all for it if it makes you feel good. I am all for people building a structure in which they can gather to exercise their faith together if that is what they feel is appropriate. I am all for people who wish to build a school in which their children not only learn the three R's but also the teachings of their particular religious faith. What I am not for is government dollars being spent on religious affairs because it is a slippery slope that can only lead to state sponsored religion.

I believe in religious freedom for all and that is why I am totally opposed to the idea of using government funds in this manner because accepting government dollars means that you are going to end up with government oversight, period, end of story. Whenever there is government money being spent you can bet your ass that either a congressman or senator is going to get his nose out of joint because of something he perceives as either being waste or that the funds are being used in some fraudulent manner and hence the government is going to stick its nose into that religion's business and begin to dictate how the money is to be spent. Then because of the government oversight you begin to have religious people get into politics in order to ensure that their religion is protected but far too often the people who do this are zealots who only see that their religion as the one true faith. Then it becomes a new religious war but now it is a war that is fought in the halls of congress for now but may soon become one fought upon a battlefield.

More people have been killed in the name of religion than for any other reason and most of the time it is the government that promotes the killing. From the beginning of time to the present, wars have been and are now being waged because of opposing religious beliefs and if you think that it could not happen in this country you are sadly mistaken. Many may think that my opinion is a long stretch of the imagination to think that by giving a few thousand dollars to rebuild a religious school could lead to a civil war but many wars have been fought for less.

These are my beliefs and I refuse to apologize or back down from them in any way so yes I am closed minded on this subject and probably others also. But it is my beliefs that force me to put my name on this column every week and if people do not agree with them then they are more than welcome to write an opposing viewpoint. We here at dubyaD40 are more than willing to publish just about any opinion piece in order to promote a variety of ideas and sometimes what started out as a one time thing becomes a weekly stint. For example there is Schuster's Shtick, Scott does a fine job on his weekly column but how many of you know that he started out writing a single op/ed. It soon turned into a weekly read for many and it is something that I look forward to every week.

So in conclusion just let me say that I ask that the reader with whom I argued with yesterday to step forward and write your take on this issue. Do not hide behind your anonymity, take your place on center stage and tell us what you believe. I challenge you to come forward and put forth your views for all to see and while you are at it explain to me how that just because I do not support your side of the argument it makes me into closed minded liberal but because your lack of support for my side makes you open minded. My hypocrisy can only go so far so should yours.

Blow Job or Abortion Rights, Choose One
By Clyde
Thursday, October 13, 2005

So Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Republican, how does it feel to be duped so easily? Your party has left you to swing in the wind once again but like the lemmings that you are you will continue to get on your knees and gargle the throat yogurt shot into your mouth by the RNC tubular mini-bar.

Not a drop was wasted when you swallowed the tax cut lies about how it was going to benefit every American without pushing the country into deficit spending. Almost 8 trillion dollars later you still believe the Republican leadership when they claim to being fiscally responsible. The fact that you now pay a higher percentage in taxes than Dick Cheney and George W. Bush should be enough for you to become a Democrat but you still cling to the hope that this will pass once the economy gets back on track.

You enjoyed the feeling of George W. Bush's nutsack hitting you beneath the chin when he told you that invading Iraq was going to stop the imminent anthrax and botulinum toxin attack upon our shores from unmanned aerial vehicles. You found it soothing when his pubic hair tickled your nose when he claimed that Saddam was trying to acquire yellow cake uranium from Niger. But when these claims were proven false instead of holding your Dear Leader accountable you took the phallic face beating and chose to believe that we invaded to free a people from an evil tyrant and sow the seeds of Democracy in the Middle East.

But all that has changed and now it would seem that you are not as willing a participant to the sodomization as you once were. Could it be that fact that the honesty and integrity claim was bullshit or maybe it is the fact that you are not safer than you would be with someone else running the country? No, for you it was the Harriet Miers nomination that finally woke you up and although I revel in your waning support for this cabal of criminals in Washington I still cannot believe that this was the issue you deemed most important.

You need to wake up to the fact that Roe vs. Wade is not going to be overturned and it will be the Republicans, not Democrats, who will stop any attempt to abolish it. You see, the Republicans need this issue in order to get and keep your support and as long as it is legal they can cash in on it. There may be some tightening of availability but for the most part it will remain as law in this country and you had better get used to it. This has been the single most important cash cow to the Republican Party for decades and the money raised on this issue alone is enough to fund an entire candidacy therefore it will not be given up.

From podium to pulpit we have heard how abortion was going to be made illegal if the Republicans were put in control since the days of Ronald Reagan. Pro-life and religious groups were promised swift and decisive action but after four years of being in control the only thing you have to show for your support is a ban on a procedure that is only used in the most extreme cases.

The fact of the matter is that the Republican Party needs a wedge issue in order to be elected because if you knew their true agenda you would realize that it is not in your best interest. Think of all of the other issues that they have lied to you about like welfare reform and the economy. Republican lawmakers bitched and moaned about welfare queens but it was the Democrats who were able to get more people off of welfare and into the work force. Republicans touted the theory of supply side economics but it was the Democrats with the theory of demand side economics to institute the greatest economic advance in our nation's history. Nothing has been done about gay marriage and our national security is woefully lacking as hurricane Katrina proved to us.

So Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Republican if you continue to vote Republican all I ask is that you treat it like going down on a mermaid, believe that it is going to be what you expect but don't be surprised when it smells like human.
