POTUS and the SOTU

Last night I turned on C-Span to watch the State of the Union speech and instead I got a rerun of Fantasy Island. Instead of a speech telling the American people the truth about the problems facing our nation, it was more like watching Tattoo running towards the dock yelling "the plane, the plane." Some of the claims he made were truly mind boggling and I really cannot believe he had the stones to say them. When a President gives the State of the Union it is expected that he would accentuate the positives and downplay the negatives. But with this gang in power, distortion, half truths and outright lies have become the norm.
I almost coughed up a lung when he said:
"In the past four years, we have provided tax relief to every person who pays income taxes, overcame a recession, opened up new markets abroad, prosecuted corporate criminals, raised home ownership to the highest level in history, and in the last year alone, the United States has added 2.3 million new jobs."
The tax relief he is so enamored with does not affect the average taxpayer, instead it further enriches the wealthy, and the recession was brought on by his policies. The new markets abroad still do nothing to help the enormous trade deficit and corporate America has shipped the jobs to these emerging markets instead of keeping them here. He sent the only woman in the country that enjoys cooking and cleaning house to jail. He raised mortgage foreclosures to the highest level since the Great Depression and regained 2.3 million old jobs paying an average of $2 less an hour of the original 6 million he lost.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that he has plans to gut every social program he can in an effort to offset his insane fiscal policies.
"My budget substantially reduces or eliminates more than 150 government programs that are not getting results, or duplicate current efforts, or do not fulfill essential priorities. The principle here is clear: a taxpayer dollar must be spent wisely, or not at all."
I like how he asserts that he expects results from these programs but he does neither explain what results are expected or what programs he is going to apply these criteria too. How ironic that he believes in spending the tax payer's dollars wisely after we learned last week that almost $9 billion cannot be accounted for in Iraq. Paul Bremer explained away the money as that you cannot expect western styled budgeting and accounting procedures be fully implemented during a war. That excuse is as ethically challenged as Tom Delay's fundraising efforts.
Another little tidbit that the chief Simian made was:
"Justice is distorted, and our economy is held back, by irresponsible class actions and frivolous asbestos claims - and I urge Congress to pass legal reforms this year."
How dare he try to deny Fox News and Bill O'Reilly the ability to sue Al Franken over a slogan? It would behoove O'Reilly to take Bush to task on this subject but somehow I doubt he will. There is no way that those who have contracted cancer from asbestos are being frivolous when they seek damages from companies who knew the dangers but decided to disregard it and failing to properly protect those who had regular contact with the material. We all know how difficult it is on Cheney's former employer to have to pay for claims that it assumed when it bought Dresser Industries, but to try to pass the cost onto the American people instead of those responsible is unethical at best and criminal at the worst.
Wally and I live about 60 miles from each other but I swear I heard the beer can hit his television when Bush made this statement:
"My Clear Skies legislation will cut power plant pollution and improve the health of our citizens."
The fact that his initiative allows for higher levels of mercury to be dumped into the air is not what I would consider a health benefit. I could go on about this but I will defer to the tree hugger on this one because I have a feeling he is going to have something to say about it.
Bush made the comment, "Social Security was a great moral success of the 20th Century, and we must honor its great purposes in this new century. The system, however, on its current path, is headed toward bankruptcy. And so we must join together to strengthen and save Social Security."
First off, Social Security is not headed towards bankruptcy and does not need to be saved. We have ample time in which we can insure that it remains solvent for many more decades than it currently is but Chicken Little needs to pay back his Wall Street contributors, so he is trying to create a false crisis.
He asserts, "Here is why personal accounts are a better deal. Your money will grow, over time, at a greater rate than anything the current system can deliver - and your account will provide money for retirement over and above the check you will receive from Social Security."
Obviously we are unable to take care of our own money so we need the government to oversee our retirement:
"We will make sure a personal account can't be emptied out all at once, but rather paid out over time, as an addition to traditional Social Security benefits."
After four years of watching these people manage a checkbook, I believe I would rather put my genitals into a meat grinder than have them take care of my finances.
The next three statements are proof positive of the contradiction in this inept little Troll and his message.
"For the good of families, children, and society, I support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage."
"Because one of the deepest values of our country is compassion, we must never turn away from any citizen who feels isolated from the opportunities of America."
"Because one of the main sources of our national unity is our belief in equal justice, we need to make sure Americans of all races and backgrounds have confidence in the system that provides justice."
The sheer insanity of this man is unmatched and he allows his own prejudices to create his agenda instead of merely influencing them. The bigotry of this right wing blow monkey is the worst thing that could happen to our country at this critical juncture in our nation's history. When we need to unite and bring about a better America, he seeks to divide us over an issue that has no place in a democracy and if we do not regain control from this scourge called neo-conservatism I fear we may lose this country for decades to come.
The Democratic rebuttal What in the world was up with the Democrats in charge of the rebuttal last night? Instead of bringing out someone with some passion for our ideals, we present to the nation a breathing portrait of American Gothic. Instead of having someone like Barrack Obama give a coherent argument that inspires us to act, we get Harry Reid of Nevada. This man is about as exciting as watching paint dry and resembles Mr. Hand on South Park instead of a Senate minority leader. Although his argument was based in fact, it lacked the luster needed to keep the interest of the viewer.
And instead of someone like Robert Wexler or Henry Waxman, it was decided that Nancy Pelosi would rebut for the House. No offense intended against Representative Pelosi but it would be better if our spokesman would be able to articulate the message without looking like she had to fight to get the words out. I swear that if she has one more face lift she will be unable to move her jaw and she will end up with a beard.
