Shrub, Rummy, and El Rushbo

The brutal murder of Nicholas Berg is one of the vilest episodes of the war in Iraq. The perpetrators of this heinous act should be hunted down and brought to justice, of that we all can agree. To ease the pain of family and friends of this young man, this must be investigated to its fullest extent to examine if there is any involvement by the U.S. authorities. We can all put on our tinfoil hats and see this as a conspiracy to cover up the abuse of the Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib but at this time I see it as more of a lack of oversight. To say that this murder could not have been one of the results of the prison abuses is blatantly short-sighted, between the bombing campaigns, the occupation, the Muslim culture, and the apparent lack of caring of the Bush administration, the Iraqi people must feel that they are only slightly better off than if Saddam were still in power. Dubya could have eased a lot of the tension by doing three very simple acts instead he did exactly the opposite. First, he should have apologized to the Iraqi people and promised them a full accounting of what exactly transpired. Instead he apologized to the Jordanian King. Isn't that like a rapist saying he is sorry to his victim's neighbor? Second, he should have demanded Rummy’s resignation immediately as an act of faith to the Iraqi people that such behavior was not to be tolerated and those in command will be held accountable. Yet he goes to the Pentagon and tells us that we owe him a debt of gratitude. Doesn't that kind of sound like the employees at Enron thanking Kenny Boy Lay for stealing all of their retirements? Third, Chimpboy should have issued a Presidential order demanding a full inquiry into all of the prisons for possible similar abuses, but what does he do, he blames it on a few lowly grunts that weren't trained or prepared for the job they were doing. As for Rummy, he should have read the report and acted upon it in January. Instead, he waited for some subordinate to tell him there is a problem. During his testimony in front of congress, he said that if he felt he could not do his job effectively then he would resign. One needs to ask what he has done effectively. He underestimated troop strength, he did not plan for an occupation, he did not address the cost correctly, and he has micro-managed in the wrong areas. If he was a man of character, or if he had any regard for the troops in the field, he would have resigned voluntarily. And during all of this the OxyContin Kid equated these acts of abuse to a frat house prank. I bet that Rush would be screaming bloody murder if this had happened during the Clinton presidency, but being as it is a Republican administration these were just a bunch of kids blowing off steam. If Limbaugh put as much effort into actually talking about facts as he does defending himself from the persecution he feels by the Palm Beach D.A. maybe some of the Republicans in congress would actually want to know the truth.

Views From a NASCAR Liberal

According to most of the media, NASCAR fans are all conservatives, well here is a NASCAR fan that is going to dispute that myth. No longer is NASCAR just a bunch of back woods, tobacco chewing, inbred, moon shiners from south of the Manson Nixon line. NASCAR fans now come from all walks of life and from all 50 states. Most of us are regular people who just like watching fast cars race down a straightaway and turn left all day. It is a time for us to kick back on a Sunday afternoon and knock back a couple of cold ones while preparing for a week at our day jobs.
At the beginning of the year we have the biggest race of the year, the Daytona 500, and Shrub decided to visit. He played it like he was this huge racing fan, unfortunately for the Republicans most people saw through the ruse for what it was, a blatant attempt to win votes. Hey Dubya, after spending hundreds of dollars to watch a race in person, people have this weird little quirk, like being able to watch the start of the damn race. They don't like being unable to get to the track because of your "Presidential" motorcade. They don't like being stuck in the concession area because of your "Presidential" entourage is taking its sweet ass time getting to your seat. Depriving these fans of the start of the start of the NASCAR season is like a guy going to a whorehouse and being unable to get a chubby until the hour is almost up, you get to the end but the thrill was gone. Here is another piece of advice for our esteemed Presidential looking Howdy Doody, if your going to claim to be a fan, stay for the whole race, not just until the cameras are off and then leave faster than a fart in a windstorm. NASCAR Dads are men who want a good job, where they can earn enough of a wage where they are able to buy a house in a safe neighborhood, and raise their families. NASCAR Moms are women who want affordable healthcare, safe food, water, and good schools. NASCAR kids want a future where they can be whatever they want instead of being in debt up to their eyeballs to pay for the tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.
I admit in the past most of NASCAR would vote Republican because they believed that the party stood for fiscal responsibility, family values, and a strong defense. But now they are beginning to see the Republicans for what they are, whores for corporate America. They see the Republicans take trillions of dollars in a budget surplus and spend it on themselves instead of investing in good schools, the environment, and prescription drugs for our senior citizens. They see corporate welfare, Bermuda tax shelters, and corrupt tax system that shifts the burden from the rich to the working middle class, and poor. So Mr. President if I were you, I would not count on a majority vote for you coming from NASCAR fans, there will still be the stubborn, bib overall wearing, talk like you've got a mouth full of shit rednecks who will not see the light, but for the most part, this NASCAR liberal sees a win for the Democrats in the upcoming election. After all, the whole premise of NASCAR is to turn left and the turn has been made.
