Manufactured Outrage

Why is it that every time I turn on the TV or radio, someone is demanding an apology for something that was said? Have we become so emotionally fragile that mere words can cause us to become this upset? Admittedly, this is an election year and each political party is going to use whatever ammunition the opposition gives them but my God, this borders on the surreal.
The problem is that with all of the outrage over what someone said is that it no longer is a matter of calling someone out for an outrageous comment, but rather it is now used as a political tool. As best as I can tell, politicians and their media lapdogs do not want a discussion on the issues but instead want people to vote because of an off-color remark.
I mean, too hell with the occupation of Iraq, Barack Obama said rednecks cling to their guns. Or universal healthcare, screw that John McCain called his wife a cunt. It is really getting annoying and to be quite frank, I am getting to the point where I say fuck politics let's talk about something more important like the in-field fly rule. And that is saying a lot coming from me.
I have been active in politics ever since I was 17 and usually getting me to talk about politics is about as hard as getting Britney to show her cooch in public. But lately, it seems all we ever talk about is how he said this or she said that. Hardly ever does the conversation have any real substance to it anymore.
The fact of the matter is that I could really care less if Jesse Jackson said he would like to cut Obama's nuts off because he perceived Obama speaking down to the black community. So the fuck what? Is that so fucking important that every news channel, radio station, newspaper, website, and carrier pigeon has to yammer on and on about it for hours on end?
To be frank, I am sick of it! If the people of this country are such pussies that we cannot tackle the very real problems facing this country because we are so wounded by someone's comment, then this country deserves to go down the proverbial shitter.

The media likes to blow these things up because scandal sells and more people might watch the news. Unfortunately, too many people already do watch the news. That's why they don't know anything. The politicians themselves aren't wounded by anything being said, they just want some spotlight action.
I'm starting to think it won't be the politicians who bring this country down, it will be the voters. We let the media tell us who to vote for because most of us can't be bothered to spend 15 minutes finding out the truth on our own. When granny gets to the voting booth, she isn't going to remember anyone's positions on the issues, she's going to remember that Obama is a Muslim because that nice looking McCain boy said so. Never mind that McCain is going to take away her oxygen tank as soon as he moves into the White House - that's one of those pesky, confusing issues and isn't important. People remember the stuff that has shock value, not substance.

You have to admit, some of these remarks seem to have become more harsh over the years. Do they really not know people are listening to them when they say they'd like to cut someone's nuts off? You're in a TV studio, dude!!
More than anything, the people connected with these campaigns need a 10 week refresher course in manners. You can disagree with an opponent without being crude or personally insulting. It's no longer enough to disagree with a policy, you have to emphasize it by calling his wife a ho. Politics has never been high on charm, but what happened to good, old-fashioned civility? Most of them have the social skills of a 10 year old bully.

Haven't been keeping statistics, but I'll bet the ones who apologize the least, win the most.
