The Politics of Politics

The crap going on in Washington has been pissing me off for quite a few years but it is only now that I put as much blame on the Democrats as I do on Republicans. In the past, I could always blame the Republicans for congress not bending to the will of the people. Everything from Terri Schiavo to the Lewinsky scandal had been perpetrated by the right wing, but now, it's the Democrats playing politics with the politics.
For some reason the Democrats, mainly Reid, Emmanuel and the other DLC'ers think, they can pull the wool over our eyes when it comes to the funding of the Iraq occupation. This bill for funding has no benchmarks or timeline and is nothing more than the blank check Bush has wanted all along. This is not a step forward it is the same old song and dance we have had to live with since GWB assumed control.
Several Democrats have been prancing around the alphabet networks claiming that they would be more likely able to garner support to end the occupation if we wait until September because that is when Petraeus will give his progress report. There is only one small problem with that kind of thinking. Show me a general willing to admit defeat when he is in charge of the fighting. It would never happen. Everyone knows that Petraeus is going to come to Washington and claim that while there's still a lot of sectarian violence, progress is being made and that we should not give up now. And what do we get then? The Republicans spouting the same old crap that we have heard since "Mission Accomplished" and another 300 or so Americans are going to die. And all because the Democrats were too busy jockeying for a better political position with their "colleagues" on the other side of the aisle.
This claim that September is going to be the magic month was the same claim we heard last year, only back then it was November. Well November is long gone and although we have gotten some dividend from our investment in a Democratic control of congress, the bill is a long way from being fully paid. We gave congress a mandate to get our men and women out of Iraq, yet the DLC'ers are too afraid that they might piss off a few Republicans so therefore we need to wait until it is more politically "convenient" for them to make a stand.
The time to make a stand is now, not some mythical time in the future. There are lives at stake. How could any Democrat stand in front the family of one of the fallen and tell them that they just couldn't save their loved one because they were afraid that they didn't have the votes and wanted to wait until they did before they acted. How could any Democrat hold his or her head up in front of some troop who lost his legs from an IED because they were too busy worrying that if they voted the wrong way, they might not get elected to another term. The fact that the Democrats are more concerned with appearing to support the troops than actually supporting the troops and bringing them home is disgusting.
The Democrats are playing a very dangerous game with their base by playing up to the fence-sitters. It is time to shit or get off the fucking pot and start holding Bush and his ilk accountable. While I laud the fact that the Democrats are beginning to have oversight, for me those crimes are secondary to the occupation. We can always deal with that crap later, right now, we need the Democrats in congress to concentrate on standing up to the Republicans and cut off the funding of this illegal occupation.
The Democrats say they do not want it to look like they are denying the troops of the tools and protection they need while serving in harm's way. They need not worry because Bush has been doing that from the start and the military realizes that. More and more the military is shifting its support from the Republicans to the Democrats and if they were smart, the Democrats would realize that military families want their people home more than they want to be a Republican.
The time to end the occupation is now, not three months from now!
