    Those pesky LEGAL Aliens

    'Operation Return to Sender' stumbles

Questions are being raised about the arrest, detention, and treatment of a long-term Ukrainian legal resident alien in Florida.

Bella Maryanovsky, a thirty-year legal resident of the United States, was arrested last week on Tuesday, September 19, when she entered immigration offices for a routine update of her green card papers. It appears she was arrested under a new immigration program called "Operation Return to Sender."

According to Michael Chertoff in a June 2006 press release, "Operation Return to Sender is another example of a new and tough interior enforcement strategy that seeks to catch and deport criminal aliens, increase worksite enforcement, and crack down hard on the criminal infrastructure that perpetuates illegal immigration."

Foley To Resign Over Sexually Explicit Messages to Minors

Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) planned to resign today, hours after ABC questioned him about sexually explicit internet messages with current and former Congressional pages under the age of 18.

A spokesman for Foley, the chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, said the congressman submitted his resignation in a letter late this afternoon to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.

Hours earlier, ABC News had read excerpts of instant messages provided by former male pages who said the congressman, under the AOL Instant Messenger screen name Maf54, made repeated references to sexual organs and acts.

UPDATE: I caught this on Foley's own website.

FOLEY CHILD SAFETY LEGISLATION PASSES SENATE

WASHINGTON - Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL), Co-chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children Caucus, applauded Senate passage of legislation he authored and introduced overhauling our nation's sex offender registration and notification laws.

"For too long our nation has tracked library books better than it has sex offenders. That day is coming to an end," said Foley. "Senator Hatch and Leader Frist have been resolute in keeping this legislation on track. We are closing loopholes that sex offenders and pedophiles have used to prey on children."

The CIA'S top counterterrorism officials felt they could have killed Osama Bin Laden in the months before 9/11, but got the "brushoff" when they went to the Bush White House seeking the money and authorization.

CIA Director George Tenet and his counterterrorism head Cofer Black sought an urgent meeting with then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice on July 10, 2001, writes Bob Woodward in his new book "State of Denial."

They went over top-secret intelligence pointing to an impending attack and "sounded the loudest warning" to the White House of a likely attack on the U.S. by Bin Laden.

Woodward writes that Rice was polite, but, "They felt the brushoff."

Take UK troops out of Iraq, senior military told ministers
Army chiefs wanted to move forces to Afghanistan but were prevented for political reasons

Senior military officers have been pressing the government to withdraw British troops from Iraq and concentrate on what they now regard as a more worthwhile and winnable battleground in Afghanistan.

They believe there is a limit to what British soldiers can achieve in southern Iraq and that it is time the Iraqis took responsibility for their own security, defence sources say. Pressure from military chiefs for an early and significant cut in the 7,500 British troops in Iraq is also motivated by extreme pressure being placed on soldiers and those responsible for training them.

"What is more important, Afghanistan or Iraq?" a senior defence source asked yesterday. "There is a group within the Ministry of Defence pushing hard to get troops out of Iraq to get more into Afghanistan."

Military chiefs have been losing patience with the slow progress made in building a new Iraqi national army and security services. Significantly, they now say the level of violence in the country will not be a factor determining when British troops should leave.

    Thanks to DownWithTyranny:

GOP-PHOBIA SEEPING DOWN TO LOCAL REPUBLICANS - EVEN IN TEAXS!

Unless you live in Texas, it's not likely you've ever heard of State Rep Martha Wong or her Democratic challenger Ellen Cohen, CEO of the Houston Area Women's Center. They are contesting the Republican-gerrymadered 134th state house district in Houston (which includes Meyerland, South Braeswood, Bellaire, Montrose, West University Place and the Medical Center). Wong is on the defensive for several reasons-- not the least of which was that she was exposed by the Houston Chronicle as having kicked off the campaign season by blatantly lying in her first political ad.

Wong represents parts of Montrose, a largely gay neighborhood, but she abstained when it came to voting for the anti-gay constitutional amendment, pissing off both gay constituents and parts of the Republican base. She also voted for a typically Texas loony plan that forces abortion providers to actually lie to women and tell them abortion causes breast cancer. And, probably the thing that is most likely to cause her to lose her seat, she voted to cut hundreds of thousands of children from the Children's Health Insurance Program (HB 2292). She also blocked funding for a stem cell research facility in Houston's medical center.

    ~snip~

After winning the primary, Wong has been desperately trying to run away from being identified with the right wing Republican Party. A really funny aspect of this is her campaign team running all over the district covering up the word "Republican" on her campaign signs with red tape. Her record-- not independent, pure Republican-- can't be covered up with the tape and no one in this affluent, educated district is fooled.

Halliburton is now offering introductory rates on Torture Insurance

    9:19 AM

Just kidding. But here's a new movie with Halliburton and other BushCo. war profiteers:

Iraq For Sale contrasts the war in Iraq with previous conflicts, noting that there are over 100,000 private contractors employed in this effort. Jobs that were previously the domain of the US military are now outsourced to firms like Blackwater Security Counseling, CACI, Titan, and KBR (and its parent company, Halliburton). Private security contractors number approximately 20,000, more than any other contingent of the coalition forces, including the British army.

The film asserts that the use of private contractors escalated because Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld was desperate to deal with the Sunni insurgency that continues largely unabated today. Given the current level of troops deployed in Iraq, that means that private contractors are the largest non-US military contingent of the multinational force.

    Your Voting Rights!
    posted by Wally
    8:25 AM

Two bills on the table, one good, one bad. Call your representatives today!

    First, the good:

Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) introduced emergency legislation to amend the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) this afternoon to offer funding to states and counties who make 'contingency paper ballots' available to voters to be used at the voter's option instead of electronic voting systems. In Barbara Boxer's words:
The American people deserve an elections system that is beyond reproach -- a system where every vote counts and every vote is counted.

Unfortunately, as we've seen in recent primary elections in Maryland, California, Georgia and other states, new electronic voting machines designed to make it easier for more people to vote are failing, and poll workers haven't been trained to use the new technology properly. Consequently, untold thousands of voters have been turned away from the polls or cast votes that weren't properly counted.

This is unacceptable in the United States of America. We can't let the failure of electronic voting machines affect this November's elections -- especially with the future of our country on the line. So Tuesday I introduced new legislation, co-sponsored by Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), to address this problem -- and I hope you'll urge your Members of Congress to support it.

Urge your Members of Congress to support my "Confidence in Voting Act" now!

Time is of the essence here. Congress is slated to adjourn at the end of the week, and we need to get this bill passed by both the House and the Senate before then.

My "Confidence in Voting Act" is simple. It urges local jurisdictions to make paper ballots available at every polling place, so any voter who wants one can use one. What's more, my legislation defrays the cost by reimbursing local jurisdictions up to $.75 for each of these contingency paper ballots produced.

This is a win-win for local governments and for individual voters. The "Confidence in Voting Act" will make it easier for states to do the right thing in this November's election -- and it will make the American people more confident about the outcome.

Please forward an email to your Members of Congress now -- urge them to support my "Confidence in Voting Act" before Congress adjourns next week!

We can't let this important bill get lost in the typical chaos of the closing days of Congress' legislative session.

That's why it's so important for you to speak out and make sure that your Members of Congress act -- and then to forward this email to everyone you know.

Help me build a groundswell of grassroots support for this critical legislation, so the American people have more confidence in this November's elections.

Urge your Members of Congress to support my "Confidence in Voting Act" now!

Thanks so much for your continued help and support.

    In Friendship,

    Barbara Boxer
    U.S. Senator

P.S. After you've sent your own email to your Members of Congress about my "Confidence in Voting Act," please forward this message to your friends & family and encourage them to do the same.

Now the bad: While you're calling and/or emailing your senators and reps to vote YES to the Boxer/Dodd voting bill, hit redial, or click below, and tell your Senators to vote NO on this one...
In front of the Senate right now is a bill that would require all voters to produce identification proving their citizenship. H.R. 4844 by Rep. Hyde (R-IL) would place severe burdens on voters – possibly the most restrictive since the policies of the Jim Crow era. It was passed by the House last week and now the Republican congressional leadership may be resorting to sneaky tactics to get it passed in the Senate.

H.R. 4844 must be stopped at all costs!
In yet another cynical exploitation of security issues in an election year, Republican congressional leaders are considering folding this bill into a must-pass appropriations bill. Whether the undemocratic restrictions in this bill are voted on in H.R. 4844 or they are attached to the conference report for an appropriations bill, your senators need to hear from you that they should OPPOSE this measure.

Call both of your senators NOW and urge them to:

    1. Vote NO on H.R. 4844.

    2. Do not allow H.R. 4844 to be attached to any appropriations conference report.

H.R. 4844 comes as a response to the right-wing fairy tale that undocumented immigrants are voting in mass numbers. But the only thing it would do is ensure that poor, minority and elderly voters, as well as students and voters with disabilities, would be disenfranchised.

Please stand up for voting rights by calling your senators today and then forward this alert to your friends and ask them to do the same.

Thank you for defending democracy from the Far Right's unscrupulous attacks.
Please call your peeps in Congress and let them know how you feel about these issues. It's only democracy at stake.

So, just for you, we'll use small words when we admit that, like your beloved Fox News, we are not trying to be "fair and balanced". Unlike them, we really don't give a rat's ass about presenting the right wing whackjob neo-con Kool-Aid drinking retard point of view. We just like to laugh at those views. There, happy now?

And now, back to our regularly scheduled idiocy du jour. These comments were in response to an article posing the question, if this is truly a "war" on terror, is it time that we as a nation "mobilize" to fight it (i.e. use our full industrial might, economic might, etc):

Maybe on September 12th of 2001 I would have said yes.

But 5 years later, we are winning BOTH fronts of the WOT, our intel services are less hindered than they were, our military is strong and will only continue to get stronger, and our will isn't anywhere near being broken.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

First our leaders need to STOP with the political correctness and recognize that ISLAM is the enemy and it NOT a religion of peace.

Secondly, STOP THE APPEASEMENT DAMMIT! It only makes them bolder.

    House OK's Torture Bill
    posted by Wally
    5:59 AM

Congress once again puts on the knee-pads for Bush

Republicans must really love torture. They love it more than they do the Constitution. More than the rule of law on which this country is based. They love it so much that they are willing, for political purposes, to overturn the 800 years of laws and freedoms, such as the writ of Habeus Corpus, laid out in the Magna Carta and followed by civilized nations for the 8 centuries since. Until today, when Congress decided that Bush's right to torture was more important. Have we finally officially become an "uncivilized" nation?
The House approved legislation yesterday giving the Bush administration authority to interrogate and prosecute terrorism detainees, moving President Bush to the edge of a pre-election victory with a key piece of his antiterrorism plan.

The mostly party-line vote, 253 to 168, in the Republican-run House came shortly after senators agreed to limit debate on their own nearly identical bill, all but assuring its passage today.
The part that really stands out in this bill is this:
The bill also gives the president the ability to interpret international standards for prisoner treatment when an act does not fall under the definition of a war crime, such as rape or torture.
So King George can decide, on his own accord, what is and what is not torture. He is no longer required to "uphold" the law, in accordance to the Constitution. He IS the law. That means that, by definition, the Rule of Law is dead, and Congress has just declared him King.

US press unmoved by terror report

The three declassified pages from what is certainly a voluminous report told us what any American with a newspaper, television or internet connection should already know. The invasion of Iraq was a cataclysmic disaster. The current situation will get worse if American forces leave. Unfortunately, neither the report nor the president provide even a glimmer of a suggestion about how to avoid that inevitable disaster.

As a defence of his policies, it [the extract] serves only to highlight the maddening circular logic that passes for a White House rationale. It goes like this: The invasion of Iraq has created an entire new army of terrorists who will be emboldened by an American withdrawal. Therefore, the United States has to stay indefinitely and keep fighting those terrorists.

By that logic, the more the United States fights, the longer the war stretches on.

Gearing Up for Rove's Pre-Election "Surprises"

Karl Rove&Co., feeling themselves freed from the bipartisan torture albatross hanging around their necks as a result of having rolled the GOP-rebel senators, are moving toward the "October surprises" they've been hinting at.

What those surprises might be range from announcing the capture or death of Osama bin Laden to a surgical strike on Iran's fledgling nuclear program to ignoring a possible major terrorist attack against the U.S. -- or, conversely, announcing that they've foiled a frightening urban bomb plot. Or all of the above, and more.

Yes, of course Rove and his minions can count on their usual bag of electoral stratagems and dirty tricks on Election Day: knocking hundreds of thousands of minority voters off the voting rolls in various key states, requiring photo-IDs (often difficult for poor and rural folks to get -- a new kind of "poll tax") in order to cast a ballot, helping create new Swift Boat-type organizations to slime Democratic opponents with millions of dollars of TV ads, relying on corruptible e-voting machines and suspect vote-counting, and so on. But they've done most of those things for five years now.

    The response she's been getting?
The week I put this sticker on my car, a lady in the Target parking lot said, "Hey, I love your sticker!" I asked her if she wanted one - I had bought extra. She said sure. I gave it to her and she put it on her car right away! The next day, I was shopping at Whole Foods. When I came out, there was a little gum wrapper under my wiper blade, with writing....it said: "I want to know where to get the DUMPRICK sticker. Can you please call me and tell me where to get one?"

To my knowledge, they are only available at a little gift shop in Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh (email us for info). I think they had them made in fact. That's why they're hard to find. If any of your readers in PA want to get one, they can call the store and I'm sure they'd be happy to mail a few out!
We love it! If anyone wants one, click on the link above to email us and we'll send you the contact information of the store where you can find them. We don't want to post their phone number online and have people call and harass them. This way requires the knuckle-dragging Santorum supporters to have enough cranial capacity to send and receive email, thereby filtering out 90% of them.

White House lied, troops didn't get best gear, they say

Remember all those times when Bush promised to the American people that he would listen to the Generals about how to handle the Iraq war?
"People don't want me making decisions based on politics," Bush said. "They want me making decisions based on the recommendations of our generals on the ground. And that's exactly who I'll be listening to.
    Bush Nov. 29 2005"

Well, George, you didn't listen back then, when they 1) asked for more troops, 2) said you needed to plan to secure Iraq after the fall of Baghdad, 3) said you needed an exit strategy, and 4) suggested that maybe this isn't such a great idea to begin with. We're waiting to see if you'll listen now, when they tell you that your Secretary of Defense is "incompetent strategically, operationally and tactically" and that "Rumsfeld and his immediate team must be replaced or we will see two more years of extraordinarily bad decision making" (Retired Army Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton). Or when they tell you "I believe that Secretary Rumsfeld and others in the administration did not tell the American people the truth for fear of losing support for the war in Iraq," and how "Rumsfeld at one point had threatened to fire the next person who mentioned the need for a postwar plan" (retired Major General John R.S. Batiste). How about when they point to you and Rummy and say "that not providing the best equipment was a 'serious moral failure on the part of our leadership'." (retired Colonel Paul X. Hammes).

Lest you dismiss these honorable men as old has-beens from the Jimmy Carter era, as is the habit of the GOP whenever they are criticized by retired military men, all three of these men have way more street cred than any of the suits on D.C.

    • Retired Colonel Paul X. Hammes responsible for establishing bases for the Iraqi armed forces.
    • Retired Army Maj. Gen. Paul Eaton was responsible for training the Iraqi military and later for rebuilding the Iraqi police force.
    • Retired Major General John R.S. Batiste commanded the Army's First Infantry Division in Iraq.

Then, he would just have the Secret Service arrest anyone who didn't stick to his program and said something he didn't like. Anyone who knows this stuff and still works on his "staff" is a glutton for punishment. Now, everyone doesn't fawn all over him, but if Hillary got him into the position of First Lady, it would be "payback" time I imagine.

Consumers skeptical of dropping gas prices

There is no mystery or manipulation behind the recent fall in gasoline prices, analysts say. Try telling that to many U.S. motorists.

Almost half of all Americans believe the November elections have more influence than market forces. For them, the plunge at the pump is about politics, not economics.

Retired farmer Jim Mohr of Lexington, Ill., rattled off a tankful of reasons why pump prices may be falling, including the end of the summer travel season and the fact that no major hurricanes have disrupted Gulf of Mexico output.

"But I think the big important reason is Republicans want to get elected," Mohr, 66, said while filling up for $2.17 a gallon. "They think getting the prices down is going to help get some more incumbents re-elected."

Clinton Brings the Hammer to his interview with Fox's Chris Wallace

Wallace started pulling his typical Fox bullshit, asking Clinton why he didn't do more to catch or kill Osama bin Laden. Bill's not having any of it, asking, among other things, why doesn't he ever ask that question of his republican guests. It's apparent that Wallace isn't used to having interviewees with brains or balls to stand up to him and stand him down.

Three part interview. Click the image or link below for part I. Links to part II and III below, as well as a link to the full transcript.

Part I Part II Part III
Sorry.... all of these have been pulled from YouTube because Fox News are pussies and don't want to be shown for the sham "news" station that they are.
    Fortunately, we still have CrooksandLiars!

And of course, the MediaMatters debunking of Chris Wallace's whiney-ass cry-baby lies about how tough of an interviewer he is on Republicans and how he's not just another FoxNews right-wing mouthpeice.

Campaign in Iraq has increased terrorism threat, says American intelligence report

    · Study contradicting Bush was not made public

An authoritative US intelligence report pooling the views of 16 government agencies concludes America's campaign in Iraq has increased the threat of terrorism.

The National Intelligence Estimate was completed in April but not made public. Its conclusions, which were first reported by the New York Times, contradict assertions made by President George Bush and White House officials during the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

"It's a very candid assessment," said one official who has seen the report. "It's stating the obvious.

It's stating what most of the world has known to be true for years. But Bush and his cult-followers are standing there with their fingers in their ears saying "nyah nyah I can't hear you"

Zogby - Voters Question Outcome Of '04 Election
    posted by Wally

Only 45% are "very confident that Bush won fair and square"

That means over half the country is NOT very confident. In fact, over 32% are not at all confident in the results of the last presidential election.
At their lowest points of popularity, do you recall anyone who claimed that Presidents' Carter and Nixon stole their elections or that they didn't win fair and square? Did any analysts or activist groups clam massive election fraud in the elections that brought these ultimately very unpopular presidents to office?
    (snip)
This is a remarkable result. Nearly two years into the second term of his presidency, less than half of those polled think that the 2004 election victory was "fair and square." 20% say they are "somewhat" confident, which is hardly an endorsement of legitimacy. Webster's defines "somewhat" as follows: "in some degree or measure: SLIGHTLY." This does not exactly qualify as an endorsement of a critical democratic process. The 32% who are "not at all confident" represent a major portion of the population holding the belief that Bush failed to win without cheating. Combining "not at all confident" with "somewhat" "slightly", according to Webster's, produces a category of 52% who "doubt" the legitimacy of the election. Altogether, these results are a clear vote of no confidence.

Spy Agencies Say Iraq War Worsens Terror Threat

A stark assessment of terrorism trends by American intelligence agencies has found that the American invasion and occupation of Iraq has helped spawn a new generation of Islamic radicalism and that the overall terrorist threat has grown since the Sept. 11 attacks.

The classified National Intelligence Estimate attributes a more direct role to the Iraq war in fueling radicalism than that presented either in recent White House documents or in a report released Wednesday by the House Intelligence Committee, according to several officials in Washington involved in preparing the assessment or who have read the final document.

The intelligence estimate, completed in April, is the first formal appraisal of global terrorism by United States intelligence agencies since the Iraq war began, and represents a consensus view of the 16 disparate spy services inside government. Titled "Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States," it asserts that Islamic radicalism, rather than being in retreat, has metastasized and spread across the globe.

New York City's Reservists Are Asked to Return Iraq Pay

When they were called up for military service in the wake of 9/11, hundreds of uniformed city workers in the Reserves faced the suspension of their city health and pension benefits. The city offered them an option: it would keep paying their salaries and continue their benefits, but when they returned they would have to repay the city their city salary or their military pay, whichever was less.

On its face, the offer made sense. And many reservists had only a few days to get their affairs together before shipping out - hardly enough time to consult accountants. Nearly all took the deal. As the war dragged on, more than 1,600 city employees, mostly police officers, signed up for the benefits program.

Now the bills from the city are coming due, for far more than many veterans imagined they would have to pay - as much as $200,000 ' and often for more money than they ever received.

    Mountjoy Campaign Misstated Navy Duty
Republican U.S. Senate candidate says claim of serving on the battleship Missouri was a mistake.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mountjoy has claimed in his campaign biography that he served aboard the battleship Missouri during the Korean War, but his military record shows no assignment on the famous vessel, The Times has found.

In an interview Thursday, Mountjoy acknowledged that he did not serve on the Missouri. Last week, when first asked about his record, he said his Missouri stint had been "very brief" and that he otherwise served on the U.S. heavy cruiser Bremerton, which has a less celebrated history.

He said later that he occasionally boarded the Missouri during the Korean conflict and was on the ship for "a couple of days at a time."

But his name does not appear on the ship's muster rolls for those years, according to a researcher engaged by The Times. Asked about this, Mountjoy said, "I would have never answered a roll on the Missouri" because he wasn't assigned to the ship.

Saudi Arabia is convinced al-Qaida leader died of typhoid, paper says

A French regional newspaper quoted a French secret service report on Saturday as saying that Saudi Arabia is convinced that al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden died of typhoid in Pakistan last month.

L'Est Republicain printed what it said was a copy of the report dated Sept. 21 and said it was shown to President Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and France's interior and defense ministers on the same day.

"According to a usually reliable source, the Saudi services are now convinced that Osama bin Laden is dead," the document said.

Guy claims he bumped uglies with CNN's Nancy Grace.
    posted by Dookie The Webmaster

Thanks to Wonkette for posting a copy of this from Craigs List. Even if this is a fake, it's still pretty funny.

I dated Nancy Grace...for about half an hour...

In early 2006 I was a guest on Nancy Grace's show. I was part of a panel discussing a double murder in New England, from which the perpetrator fled overseas. (Thankfully, the accused was extradited back to the U.S. and is currently awaiting trial.) My role, as explained to me by Nancy's producer, was that of the moderate defense attorney who ultimately would agree with Ms. Grace that the accused, by virtue of the fact that he is not a U.S. citizen, has no rights in this situation.

Fast forward to April 2006. I was on vacation in Phoenix and stayed at a hotel at the same time as Nancy, who was a headline speaker at a law enforcement conference. I really did not expect to see her, and doubted that she would remember me on the off chance we crossed paths. On the second evening of my stay I was dropped off at the hotel by a shuttle van from a nearby golf course where I played. I was lugging my golf bag in through the lobby when who should I see striding toward me but Nancy. She is a striking person with a confident walk, and she was really turned out. She wore a very stylish two-piece suit of green and lavender, with black heels. She came right up to me and said, "Hey! You were on my show in January, right? Aren't you ***?"

I agreed it was me, and apologized for my appearance, having just come off the golf course. She laughed and said something to the effect of, "You're much more handsome in person than I expected, despite your condition." We chatted a bit more, and then I begged off, telling her that the golf bag was really heavy, and I hoped she was doing well. Then she stunned me. "Would you like to get a drink or something? I don't really know anyone here, and my speech is all done. I have nothing to do until my flight leaves in the morning." I'm sure I hemmed and hawed and maybe even blushed, but ultimately I agreed to have a drink, as long as I could go take a shower first. She asked me what room I was in, and I told her. "I'm on the fifth floor, too" she said. "Let me go change and we'll meet back down here in, say, 30 minutes?"

So I grabbed the next elevator while she went over to the concierge about something. I dumped my clubs in the closet of my suite and hit the shower. Really, I couldn't believe I was going to have drinks with a celebrity. Nothing like that ever happened to me before. I have to confess, I was really nervous, and a little excited. In fact, with all that soaping going on in the shower, I got half a woody going. I finished up and grabbed a towel and headed back out to check out the closet again, wondering if I'd have time to iron a shirt and pants. Imagine my shock when I walked out of the bathroom to find Nancy Grace standing in my living room wearing nothing but her black heels and hose.

    It get juicier

Black Republicans Have Put Out a Radio Ad Claiming That Democrats Started the KKK, Martin Luther King JR was a Republican, and that Dems are racist and GOP is all about the poor and working class.

This is one of the funniest political ads I've ever heard. It's almost embarrassing, but then, it's been a long time since Republicans have been embarrassed about blatantly lying.
The ad features one woman telling another: "Dr. King was a real man. You know he was a Republican."

In the ad, the woman goes on to say, "Democrats passed those black codes and Jim Crow laws. Democrats started the Ku Klux Klan." Her companion replies, "The Klan? White hoods and sheets?"

Classic stuff. You have to Listen to the ad

They are totally retarded. I hope they run this every day in every market in the country. It's a perfect reminder to people of why they have every right to be pissed off after 6 years of being lied to and jacked around.

For the record, Dr. King never endorsed either party, nor was the KKK affiliated with or endorsed by any political party.

House Judicial Committee Passes Bill Approving Torture, Shielding Bush from War Crimes

After losing the vote, they waited until two Democrats left the room and then REVOTED on it to pass it.

The amendment might have passed had two Democrats not missed the vote; the two were at a news conference on the Medicare drug benefit. A spokesman for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, one of the two, said she was rushing back for the vote but just missed it. "She's obviously disappointed," said the spokesman, Jonathan Beeton. "It was unfortunate timing."
    LINK
Unfortunate timing my ass, the GOP chair waited until they were gone to call for a revote, because Republicans LOVE their torture.
Earlier today, the panel voted 20-17 against the bill, which opponents said would weaken protections against abuse for both U.S. and enemy prisoners of war.

    (snip)

All 17 Democrats on the committee voted against the bill, as did two Republicans, Jeff Flake of Arizona and Bob Inglis of South Carolina. They cited the legislation's potential to expose captured U.S. service members to retaliation and to undermine U.S. prestige and values.

"The honor of our nation would be stained by this detestable legislation," said Representative Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat.
    LINK
Among some of the more interesting tidbits included in this bill are the following:
(e)(1) Except as provided for in this subsection, and notwithstanding any other law, no court, justice, or judge shall have jurisdiction to hear or consider any claim or cause of action, including an application for a writ of habeas corpus, pending on or filed after the date of the enactment of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, against the United States or its agents, brought by or on behalf of any alien detained by the United States as an unlawful enemy combatant, relating to any aspect of the alien's detention, transfer, treatment, or conditions of confinement.
