Iraq War's Price Tag Nears Vietnam's
The total cost of the Iraq war is approaching the Vietnam War's expense, a congressional report estimates, while spending for military operations after 9/11 has exceeded it.
The new report by the Congressional Research Service estimates the U.S. has spent $648 billion on Iraq war operations, putting it in range with the $686 billion, in 2008 dollars, spent on the Vietnam War, the second most expensive war behind World War II. Since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the U.S. has doled out almost $860 billion for military operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere around the world.
All estimates, adjusted for inflation, are based on the costs of military operations and don't include expenses for veterans benefits, interest on war-related debts or assistance to war allies, according to the nonpartisan CRS.
The report underscores how the price tag has been gradually rising for the war in Iraq, which began in March 2003. In late 2002, then-White House budget director Mitch Daniels estimated the Iraq war would cost $50 billion to $60 billion. A year later, L. Paul Bremer, then-chief of the U.S. occupation government in Iraq, said the war would cost $100 billion.

Now this is an outrage even the simple minded can get their teeth into. You mean it's cost more to waste a few hundred thousand towel heads than the more cost efficient killing of 3.5 million Asians? Kerist! As outrageous as the price of gas! And this is with the aid of cluster munitions and other upgrades to our aresnal? Without the aid of "smart bombs" we managed fine, flattening and wasting god knows how many men women and children, and now with bombs we can steer after they've already left the dumper we're only in the hundreds of thousands? Outrageous!!

This is the fault of every American. You can ALL demand the impeachment of Bush. He is a man about the same caliber of person as Sadam Hussein. He is an insane criminal that deserves to be punished. He has ruined almost the entire world economy. He has made slaves of 90% of the U.S. population, so he and his cronies (especially) his family, can get wealthy beyond belief. It is way past time for the revolution and for Americans to reclaim their prosperity and birthrights. If we do not immediately impeach this monster, most of the evidence that we need will be sealed in his Library for decades and we will not be able to use it against him. Wake up, take to the streets and demand an accounting. Billions more of our money (almost worthless now) will soon go to the corporate fatcats at Freddie Mac and Sallie Mae. That will destroy our economy even more. Get off your asses and demand immediate impeachment. If nothing else it will serve as a warning to future psychopaths who use black ops to steal our country. Don't you people care about anything? How can any sane person actually believe that corporate policed capitalism is an economic system that can even remotely be fair? Don't you think that in the worlds richest country, healthcare, housing, education and a social safety net (not for the corporations but for the individuals)should be a right instead of a birthright given only to the wealthiest individuals? IMPEACH FAST!

Well ole buddie, I'm with you on lots of your statements, but it sounds like you're disassociating yourself from us sinners. Or maybe the whole thing just ain't hittin on all 8 cylinders, but OK, you're right, time to do what the Constitution instructs us to do when things have reached this point. I agree with ya 100% on that. When you round up, say..maybe 200,000 (personal estimate) like me who'll show up when and where you say. We'll all be adequately and properly armed and I'm sure with a little bit of planning we can take over all govt. buildings and arrest or however necessary cut the chain of command, and then burn the fucking place to the ground. Not the Smithsonian or nuthin, just political ones. But you're going to have to do the legwork and setup stuff since it's your call to action I'm responding to and all at my own cost. I pay for my ticket. I bring my own rifle and other gear. Maybe you could arrange a conference before to iron out planning differences. Lots of people think it would take a lot less than 200 thousand and they may be right. There's not as many guns on the ground as many might think right in the center of it all. But you'd better plan on lawmakers out of town that need intercepting, but if you time it right could be minimized. So get crackin dude, will wait for your instructions with great anticipation. And looking back on the first Revolution you better not depend on much support from the "we can change it from within" centrist Democratic party either. They'll cringe at the thought of rows of gallows set up on Pennsylvania Ave. Total pussies, most of em hate guns and will duck from a real fight but don't count on any help either. Done right it could be the Civil War without the war part. Just the reconstruction, but without all the stealing, genocide and the first real taste of Corporate welfare the Republicans made of that criminal bit of history mistaught till since so few know the truth of it, all planned and orchestrated from the grave by Lincoln. That brings me to a personal request. That the Lincoln memorial be the first statue, just a few of em that we should tear down. That'll sure get attention. Then, since we'll control the airwaves, make FOX and all the others play facts about the only real dictator we've had, and the public worships the fucker! Oh boy what fun we can have with just the news shows!

Wow, what an array of comments. First a racist tirade - not upset about how wrong this entire war is, but that the weapons he's paying for aren't killing enough "towel heads". Way to get people to write you and your ideas off completely, "redneck". You won't mind that I call you that, it's the style of communication that seems to fit you best.
Then we get the revolutionary. I'm just as upset with this administration as you are and have voiced my support for impeachment many times - sorry, I guess I'm just a loser because I haven't made it happen yet. You really think throwing our own country into civil war while trying to fight two wars overseas is the answer? I suggest you take a few deep breaths and rethink the situation. If you come up with the same solution, it's time for an intervention. What happens after you burn the place down and take over? Who's in charge? How do you go about restoring law and order? How do you keep the economy from collapsing? How do you keep people from killing each other in the streets over political differences? Who will be fighting with you when the gov't unleashes the rest of our troops and weaponry on you?
Then the third one - don't know where you're coming from at all. Agree? Disagree? Care at all about the actual topic? Can't tell from the disjointed ranting and raving. What the hell is all that about the Lincoln monument? You got a problem with a guy that's been dead for 150 years?
Blogs are a great place to share ideas until they're taken over by people who are self-obsessed and don't know how communication and discussion actually work. They prefer making outrageous statements to having an intelligent exchange of ideas. But maybe those goals are too lofty for people who spend all their time on the internet.
As to the article in question, I'm aware that there's an ongoing investigation into war profiteering, which is really the only reason for this war. It's long overdue and going very slowly, but at least it's happening. And if you pay enough attention to what happens in Congress on a day to day basis, you'd notice they are in fact discussing impeachment. It will never succeed because there are still enough Republicans standing in the way, but some very interesting statements have been entered into the Congressional record. History will never view this administration kindly and I'd be shocked if they weren't brought to justice on an international level. With all the stuff about Bosnian genocide coming up again, you'd think someone would make the connection.

You must be new around here I think. There aren't a lot of deep political comments round these parts pal. You want to waste your breath talking to idiots, go to the Huff Post and have a ball. The first comment is a farce, meant to show the basic U.S. foreign policy goals in terms any bubba could understand, and hopefully take offense at. As for the 'revolutionary', I think you mix ole md for somebody else. He's an OK type but a little unfocused. And coming to #3, well that's an attempt to respond to md with a hopefully playful rant. Your question about Lincoln intrigues me though. Read a book about a long long time ago in a land far far away, America a hickup of time ago and the time that the Constitution we all love to love was trashed, war crimes committed with some genocide on the side by one of our most famous worshiped Presidents. Read "The Real Lincoln" by Thomas DiLorenzo and if you want to have your desired "intelligent discussion" maybe "A Short History of Progress", authors name not handy, but not hard to find, then you won't make statements showing you want to discuss how we got here without knowing how (it's written about in these things called 'books') Because 150 years ago a dead guy derailed our so called democratic Republic and turned it into the monster corporation it was never meant to be. Then come back and we'll talk turkey.
