U.S. Deficit to Hit Record $490 Billion in 2009

The U.S. budget deficit will widen to a record of about $490 billion next year, an administration official said, leaving a deep budget hole for the next president.

The projected deficit for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1 is far higher than the $407 billion forecast by President George W. Bush in February. The official also confirmed a report in USA Today that the deficit this year will be less than the $410 billion estimated in February.

The bigger shortfall for fiscal 2009 may reflect dwindling tax receipts because of the U.S. economic slowdown, the cost of payments distributed under the $168 billion economic stimulus package and the continuing cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"We've already seen a pretty sharp cooling in tax receipts and it's just going to continue into next fiscal year," Stephen Stanley, chief economist at RBS Capital Markets, said in a telephone interview.

What's really sad is that the guy who opened fire in that Tennessee church yesterday did it because 1) he was upset about not being able to find a job, and 2) he hated liberal policies (it was a very liberal church).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the conservatives who took his livelihood away? He's a former truck driver - you got no goods to haul, you got no job. The liberals didn't dig this hole, it was good ol' George.

I'm just waiting for the geniuses out there to say the congregation should have been armed so they could have stopped him. Riiiight. 200 people firing aimlessly in front of children is much safer than one nutjob.

Or maybe he's among the tens of thousands that got tanked with NAFTA. Being a truck driver suggests very possibly. You're under an unfortunate illusion if you think it's the Republicans that fuck up the economy. They all do, it's part of the plan and they get along fine when it's just peasants. This quote by the "great" President Clinton I find chilling but I guess Democrats, like Republicans see only what they want to see, "We can't be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans ..." (President Bill Clinton, USA Today, March 11, 1993, Page 2A) Now who's side is HE on? Nor is Obama, as the Dems are probably soon to find out. This so called "election" is to decide which of the two drunks in the front, fighting over the wheel, get's to drive us over the approaching cliff they mutually decided long ago to drive towards. And who's to say what might have happened had SOMEONE been armed at that church. Have you ever been shot at? Well I'll tell you this, you need a gun or you're screwed, and it could have been a fight rather than a slaughter. Would you rather go down fighting or roll over on your back and die? Ask those 200 people what they think before you arrogantly assume anything. We weren't there.
