Iraq bloodshed in April kills 1,073
At least 1,073 Iraqis were killed across the country in April, most of them slaughtered in fierce fighting between security forces and Shiite militants, security officials told AFP Wednesday.
According to data collected by Iraq's interior, health and defence ministries and made available to AFP, 966 civilians were killed in April, followed by 69 policemen and 38 soldiers.
The death toll in April is marginally lower than in March which saw 1,082 Iraqis killed.
"The death toll in April is mainly driven by fighting between (Shiite) militants and security forces," a security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

There's an interesting piece in the Christian Science Monitor about the conflict between Sunni and Shia being mostly politics and media hype. What you have are extremists of each group going after each other - sort of like the KKK meeting up with the Black Panthers. Those extremists make up about 1% of all Muslims, but they get all the media coverage.
Exactly why you hear so many people say, "Let's get out of Iraq because 'those people' are going to kill each other anyway." It's not true. The chaos in Iraq is a direct result of having their government dismantled and then completely absent for months on end. No direction, no security, no law and order. The same thing would happen here. You'd have KKK and Black Panther members blowing each other up because - who's going to arrest them? There's no police, no military. Just a foreign military unable to determine what their job is and firing at anything remotely dangerous.
