Congress acts on bill to decriminalize marijuana

Congressman Bill Frank's Personal Use of Marijuana Act hits the House floor April 17, 2008

Today Congressman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) introduced legislation to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. The bill, dubbed the Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act of 2008, marks the first time in decades that Congress has considered removing criminal penalties for marijuana. Congressman Frank's legislation would decriminalize the possession of up to 100 grams of marijuana (3ozs) and the not-for-profit transfer of one ounce of marijuana. It would not affect laws prohibiting drug sales or the cultivation of marijuana, and it would not affect state or local laws regulating marijuana possession.

"It's time for the politicians to catch up with the public on this ," Congressman Frank said. "The notion that you lock people up for smoking marijuana is pretty silly."

The bill incorporates the basic recommendation of the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse (also known as the Shafer Commission). The commission, which was administered by the White House and published its findings in 1972, recommended that then-president Richard Nixon decriminalize possession of marijuana in amounts that constituted "simple possession."

Thirty-six years later, Rep. Frank will try to do just that.

I don't see how this bill could not be ratified. Amazingly, we do have the christian Taliban and monied interests that do not want this bill to pass. We do not live in a democracy. Ask the Bilderbergers.

It's insane that marijuana can't be used as a prescription in this country. There are far more serious drugs available by prescription and marijuana has a definite positive effect on those going through cancer treatment. I don't see what the problem is as long as it's regulated as other drugs are.

Wait... the FDA kinda sucks right now. I should say "as long as it's regulated BETTER THAN other drugs are". It'd be nice to have confidence that the prescriptions keeping me alive won't kill me one day.

Unless anybody didn't notice, the govt. has no right to prohibit any drug. Till the 30s you could buy your morphine, heroin, weed and cocaine for your horse in Sears, and there was no drug "problem". These laws are jobs programs at this point and they CAN'T do what's right, millions of drug warriors would be out of work. And it'd be one less boogyman they have to scare you with. I've tried everything at one time or another and you know what the most destructive, dangerous and socially damaging drug there is? Booze, and look what happened there. And look what it's doing now. Something like 5000 or so people croaked from "illeagle" drugs last year and somewhere over 100,000 croaked taking what their doctor prescribed them, as prescribed. We all need a crutch, whatever it is, Jesus or smack. Don't tell me which I have a right to.
