Nader announces new run for president
Ralph Nader said Sunday he will run for president as a third-party candidate, criticizing the top White House contenders as too close to big business and pledging to repeat a bid that will "shift the power from the few to the many."
Nader, 73, said most people are disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties due to a prolonged Iraq war and a shaky economy. The consumer advocate also blamed tax and other corporate-friendly policies under the Bush administration that he said have left many lower- and middle-class people in debt.
"You take that framework of people feeling locked out, shut out, marginalized and disrespected," he said. "You go from Iraq, to Palestine to Israel, from Enron to Wall Street, from Katrina to the bumbling of the Bush administration, to the complicity of the Democrats in not stopping him on the war, stopping him on the tax cuts."
"In that context, I have decided to run for president," Nader told NBC's "Meet the Press."

Honestly, Nader used to be my hero when I was a child. I feel that if he were elected America would benefit immensely. We would get answers to 9-11, and I believe Nader would press for the prosecution of Bush and Cheney. I could be wrong. I haven't followed him since I was a child. I will now be checking out his views and philosophies as a viable option to more of the same which I think all of the cadidates now running offer us.Would he push for universal healthcare without insurance companies? Would he propose public financed elections and an end to lobbyists? These are a few of the positions I will be looking at. I know that most people feel he is just a spoiler meant to hobble legit Democratic candidates. I am not sure. We need some REAL changes in our society. Not more ambiguous claims. I was a dedicated Edwards proponent. It is truly unfortunate that he was ignored by the MSM because of his anti-corporate agenda. What is worse are the electorate whose MSM controlled minds and stupid one-liner solutions make up a large precentage of the voting population. I promote an incentive program for voters to exercise their right to vote. Whether its a $100.00 rebate or a paid day off work for proof of voting, or anything that entices all Americans to vote. I am defintely not looking for a "spoiler" but a progressive that will let the sunshine in.

md, I agree totally except Nader isn't the Nader of old. He only comes out every presidential election under the guise of "bringing up the issues the others won't talk about." Frankly, if it is so damn important to him then instead of bucking the system and mucking up the works, he should join the Democrats and fight the good fight from within. Believe me when I say that I have contemplated leaving the party but in my opinion that would be just like leaving the country and only bitching about it from afar.
Personally, I would rather stay in, fight for my ideals and try to change the party.
Btw, thanks for all of your posts, they are always insightful and I enjoy them!
Peace!

MD you are a breath of fresh air. I'm so sick of Democrats calling Nader a "spoiler" when I think why so many of the actually hate the man is because he represents who they used to be before they either sold out or gave up. He DID NOT lose Gore the election of 2000. Gore and the DLC did it all by themselves. Nader certainly isn't my first choice but given the Democratic probably ticket he's head and shoulders above anything the "New Democratic Party" has to offer. 9/11 would not have happened if Nader had been elected. That alone should be enough to open peoples eyes, but alas that would be painful and require some introspection from people, two things Americans seem to avoid at any cost. Nice to hear a voice of reason among the groupie mentality pervading the so called "Democratic Party". Dare to know.

hey "no fucking sheep",
Why is it tht Nader wants to come in at at end of the long primary where candidates are vetted and so are their ideas. I definitely agree with the points he has raised. free healthcare..all of the progressives wet dreams. I suspect from his having done this now 5 times and is silent the rest of the time about such necessary goals, that he is in fact a spoiler and his true mission is to muddy the waters while McCain stills the bait. It is sad that he doesn't find a platform for his viable solutions instead of his last minute presidential bid that he doesn't really seem to want to win. why couldn't he have supported Kuccinich ,Edwards or started at the beginning with the other candidates? Why not dedicate his life to his beliefs rather than just the few months before election? If he did, then he would be viable, this way he comes across as a spoiler. His path is one I'd rather folow, but I have the idea there is a pit to fall into on the trail.
