Bush cancels event after Ledger's death
The death of Heath Ledger prompted the White House to postpone President Bush's event Wednesday promoting an ad campaign aimed at preventing prescription drug abuse.
Ledger, 28, who was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," was found dead Tuesday in his New York apartment. There were sleeping pills near him, but the cause of his death remains under investigation.
The president was to make a statement in the Roosevelt Room on the Office of National Drug Control Policy's television advertisement about preventing prescription drug abuse. A federally financed study released in December at the White House showed illicit drug use by teens continued to gradually decline overall this year, but the use of prescription painkillers remained popular among young people.

Personally, I think Ledger's death was purely accidental but it points out the danger of mixing prescriptions and/or over the counter drugs. People tend to assume they're really safe - otherwise they wouldn't be on the market, right? Wrong.
I'm glad to see the Bush administration trying to do something to promote awareness of the prescription drug problem, but perhaps they should start with regulating the drug industry instead of putting out ads that teenagers are just gonna laugh at.
The Bush admin. and their cronies played a part in this problem when they started consumer advertising of drugs. Increased advertising has led to a definite increase in prescribed medication.
Throw in the fact that not all medications are being fully tested before they're marketed and you have a serious problem. But Big Pharma has a 17% profit margin (highest of all industries) so I guess that makes it OK.
